How We Serve
Society members offer their time, talents, and love in many ways. Some make home visits or telephone calls to assess a person or family’s needs. Some drive trucks to collect material donations or deliver goods to those in need. Some sort, repair and package those donations. Some serve at our Distribution Centre, including our free Clothing Room. Others help by handling requests made to our 24/7 Helpline or managing the Society’s online and social media presence. Some offer their personal gifts by serving in leadership roles.
Individual conferences also have their own special projects, according to local needs. Some collect and pack goods for shipment to needy northern communities. Others buy and package food items for hungry kids to take home on the weekend.
We finance our services by raising monetary donations, seeking grants from various sources, holding charity sales, and selling vintage items and collectables through our retail store, Vinnies Treasure Shoppe.
There is no cost to a friend in need for any of the goods and services provided by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Any information collected by an SSVP volunteer when interacting with a person is held in strict confidence. All members of the Society are screened through a Police Information Check and are trained in prevention of abuse, discrimination, and harassment.
Vincentians aim primarily to alleviate urgent individual and family needs, to deliver the essentials of a dignified life that many of us take for granted. But we are also concerned with identifying the root causes of those needs in our society and contributing to their elimination through our advocacy and social justice activities.
