Society of Saint Vincent de Paul partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a volunteer-driven organization whose inspiring mission is simple:
“No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town.”
SHP provides free beds to children between the ages of 3 and 17, ensuring they have a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Each complete bed includes a handcrafted wooden bed frame, bed rails, a new mattress, bedding, and a pillow.
The beds can be assembled as either:
A single twin bed, or
Two twin beds stacked together to create a bunk bed.
Bunk beds are especially valuable for many of the families served by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, helping maximize space while providing comfortable sleeping arrangements for siblings.
Every bed is delivered and assembled in the family’s home by dedicated volunteers.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace depends entirely on the generosity of donors, community partners, grants, and volunteers. Approximately $450 is required to provide one complete bed, covering the cost of lumber, mattresses, bedding, pillows, and hardware.
Volunteers from the Strathcona Chapter of SHP and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul work together in community bed-building events.
During these events, volunteers:
Sand pre-cut lumber
Assemble headboards and footboards
Pre-drill hardware holes
Prepare beds for efficient delivery and installation
Whether you volunteer with family, friends, coworkers, or on your own, every bed you help build gives a child a safe place to sleep and a renewed sense of comfort and dignity.
Perhaps the most rewarding moment comes when a child sees their new bed for the first time. The excitement on their face—and knowing they will no longer be sleeping on the floor—is something our volunteers never forget.
"The excitement of the children when they see their bed makes one’s day … knowing that they are no longer sleeping on the floor."
Our Partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP)
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul’s partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace began with a simple conversation and a shared commitment to ensuring no child sleeps on the floor.
One of our members noticed information about Sleep in Heavenly Peace at Lowe’s and brought it to a Society meeting. After connecting with Julie and Mark Parr of the Strathcona County Chapter, we discussed the growing need for children’s beds and the financial challenges of meeting that need through our own resources alone.
Together, we developed a partnership in which Sleep in Heavenly Peace would build and supply beds while Society of Saint Vincent de Paul volunteers would deliver and assemble them in the homes of families we serve.
The partnership officially began in April 2024 and quickly proved to be a tremendous success. What started as a small initiative soon expanded to delivering several beds each month. By the end of September 2024, volunteers had already delivered 37 beds to local children.
Recognizing the impact, the Society launched a pilot project in January 2025, providing 100 beds across four Conferences—one from each Particular Council: All Saints, Good Shepherd, St. Alphonsus, and St. Theresa. Every bed in the pilot project was successfully delivered by the end of June 2025.
Following the success of the pilot, the Society approved expanding the partnership across all Conferences in September 2025, enabling even more children and families to receive the gift of a safe and comfortable place to sleep.
Every bed represents more than furniture. It provides comfort, dignity, security, and hope for a child who deserves a good night’s sleep.
